Tuesday
28th June 2011
To all intending to attend the beginner’s session on
the above date,
As you will remember that at the last session we agreed to
start work on “Summertime” - Simple Comping as
arranged by Rich Severson from www.99centguitarlessons.com
which is in Am (C). Those of you that have purchased the lesson
from Rich will have a good idea of the arrangement and lesson
objectives, any one who has not yet got it will have to pick
it up on the session as we go through it.
We have also agreed to work on “A Day In The Life Of
A Fool” again from a Rich Severson arrangement and in
Gm (Bb).
I have copies of the arrangements for both these tunes for
anyone has not purchased the lesson before our session. I
do however strongly recommend you buy the lessons from Rich,
at approximately £2.70 each including the arrangement
and a video lesson from Rich Severson they are great value.
Look forward to seeing you at the session, Ken. |

The
current songs we are working on in the Beginners Sessions
are Autumn Leaves and Tenderly. All group members seem
to be able to either play the rhythm and or the melody for
both these standards. I would therefore like to suggest
we start working on comping (as apposed to 4 to the bar strumming)
and improvisation or melody embellishments (that we hear our
more accomplished fellow society members playing) in the next
couple of sessions.
If you have any ideas for how we could go about getting started
or indeed any comping etudes we could practice for these two
numbers, I would love to hear from you. You could send
me examples and I will get them distributed around the group
prior to our next meeting on 30th November 2010.
To start us off, I have an example of a comping arrangement
for Tenderly by Rich Severson (from 99Cent.com and guitarcollege.com)
that I am using. I will want to check with him before
I would distribute printed examples of his work, but I would
be willing to play/demonstrate it behind someone playing the
melody.
For our next number we would like to play...
Steve Ettridge and I have just started to work on “Have
You Met Miss Jones”, comping and melody and I would
like to know if other Beginners would like to join us in developing
this fine tune up to performance level.
As always please contact me through the link at the bottom
of the page.

Background |
The
Southern Jazz Guitar Society mission statement is
'Dedicated
to foster the art and craft of the jazz guitar'.
In
order to achieve
this aim, we need to ensure that players of all levels are
encouraged to join and then take part in as many playing opportunities
as possible.
In
the past, a set of 'Beginners Numbers' have been used to encourage
new members and those of us with less confidence to play at
open club nights (society meetings
with no organised event or guest appearance).
During 2009 members have not taken up this opportunity, the
general opinion being, that this is because there has been
no one organising this activity.
It
is therefore incumbent upon the members who would like to
take advantage of these opportunities, to get together and
organise Beginner and Intermediate Players Sessions
ourselves. |
Objectives |
Members
were asked to contribute their personal objectives for joining
the SJGS Beginners and Intermediate Players Group. The
aim of this request is to provide the group with a framework
which will embrace the aspirations of all its members.
Below are the current objectives.
1.
To
give new members, beginner and intermediate players within
the society the opportunity to play together in an atmosphere
where they feel under less pressure to perform.
2.
To
organise the Beginners and Intermediate Players Sessions
in such a way that players can choose to play any of the part/s,
(harmony / chords, the head, improvisation)
of a piece chosen for any given session.
3.
To
encourage members to practice the parts they intend to try
out at Beginners and Intermediate Players Sessions
at home, or where applicable with other members, then come
together with the group to develop it and add that live session
experience we are all looking for.
4.
To
provide a forum for members to interact and both give and
receive help and advice on how to achieve their aims.
5.
To
act within sessions in a way that enables both you and the
other members to achieve their aims. |

How
the group operates |
A
manageable number of Standards (3-6) are chosen by the group;
these are used for all the activities of the group (but
not all at one session).
You
need to learn a part (rhythm,
head/melody or improvisation) of at least one of
the selected songs (the more you
learn the more opportunities to play) then pluck
up the courage to come along and join in.
All
the songs selected are from the regular real books, if by
chance a song on the list is not in a book you have, song-sheets
can be obtained from the organiser.
You
need to be careful to learn the songs in the keys shown above
if you want to be able to join in.
To
be certain that someone in the group will be working on a
particular song at a session you intend to attend, check with
the organiser before-hand. He'll only know though, if
everyone keeps him informed! The intention is that after
a while we will all know enough to accommodate any request.

What
to learn |
Whatever
you feel capable of, and would like to develop in your playing.
If you want/need to develop the ability to play just the basic
chords in a group setting, or if you want to try out a walking
base line with harmony or even some chord substitutions.
If you have reached the stage where you can keep what ever
you are working on going through a couple of choruses, for
any of the above standards, then bring it along and we'll
give it a go. |
